I am overwhelmed by materialism

Too many choices

Too many things

I’ve given away the songs my heart sings

Trading them for some plastic veneer

Now the sadness is all too sheer

I am longing for the music of yesteryear

Or maybe the promises of tomorrow

This joy, this anger, this deepening sorrow

All swirling within me

Nothing moving

Nothing swinging

Nothing laughing in the sunlight

Filled with courage, filled with fright

I wonder what could bring on the change of it all

I long for something instant, yet

I know this will not be, I would not bet

That a bolt of lightning will be the solution to all my whimsies

No, a building redwood amongst all this frenzy

Is simply the way life’s meant to be

Now I see
